Round the Island Race 2018

Post by Chesso »

Hi All
It is still early days. The signs so far are positive and there is a very good chance that an event will be held on September 15th and 16th this year.
This is a brilliant way for the class to celebrate Ian Proctor's centenary year on the water.
The event will be based at Lymington Town SC, a club with a long and glorious Osprey sailing history. There will be a compulsory Friday evening briefing following rigging up.
The plan is to make a 7am start, weather gods permitting and sail anticlockwise around the island. If the forecast for Sunday is more favourable there will be sailing at Lymington on the Saturday.
Boats will need to have been self checked to minimise chances of gear failure and each one will be GPS tracked.
As there will be a strict upper limit on numbers entry will be by invitation from the organising committee.
Entry fee will very much depend on our success in getting sponsorship so if you have any ideas on this or can help please let us know.
If you are interested in taking part, contact David Downs to register your interest.
As the plans develope we will keep you posted.
We do need to field some suitable RIBs with experienced crews for the event. Please let me know if you can help in this area.
Looking forward to a memorable sail in the dinghy designed for the job.
Oscar

While there are still several i's to dot and t's to cross we have made some good progress on an Osprey Round the Island race in September this year. Not least in getting Mike Pickers to sponsor it.

2018 NoR Round Island Race at http://ospreysailing.org/cms2/index.php ... sland-race

The Entry Form has yet to be produced so if you could let Oscar and me know if you intend to enter that will help in fixing costs etc. Contact details are on the NoR. Despite the sponsorship this will not be a cheap event but we expect the entry fee to be not more than £100 per boat.

We will be looking for competitors to help in getting RIBs etc available and may well be asking competitors to record their finish times themselves. It is likely that Roger Proctor will be the official race starter.

I should point out that this race is not something to be undertaken lightly, will take around 10 hours and for a significant part there will be limited or no places of refuge therefore both boat and crew must be fit for the race.

It will however be a significant achievement to have successfully completed.

Regards

Update.
Things have moved forward and the Entry Form and Pre-Race Checklist have been published. However please note the following:
Entries are limited to twenty boats, this is the most that we consider we have the facilities to deal with. If more than twenty entries are received by 31st August then priority will be given to the fifteen teams that have previously registered interest either through Facebook or by email and then on a first come, first served basis. Completed entry forms to be emailed to davdowns@btinternet.com.

There's a chance that I could be available to crew if someone (sensible) is lacking some experienced Osprey ballast, and has a reliable boat.

Seems a once in a lifetime opportunity ...

For once I'll sign off properly.

The GUL Osprey Round the Isle of Wight race is only days away. The weather forecast is looking promising, the first of the Safety Boats has already arrived on site at Lymington. Several of the teams, being hardened athletes, have completed their pre-race build up with warm ups at Sheppey or Kielder last weekend. In fact those at Kielder were so dedicated in their training that the club had to send out for a second barrel of beer!
Tracking for the race is being provided by Sailing Southwest and they have a web page dedicated to the event where you can track the progress of the race as it happens. https://www.sailingsw.co.uk/osprey-round-island-race.

The copy of the report on Sailing Anarchy web site [http://sailinganarchy.com/2018/09/17/raptors/] was updated with this comment from an Anarchist:
Update: We received this note from an Anarchist:

Nice lead story today. Those bloody Ospreys going round on Saturday… we raced the same course two-handed on the J/80 starting an hour later and beating back up the Solent in 20kt after 8 hours we were pretty grumpy to see them all still in front…Bloody unsporting fellows, if you ask me! And no doubt they deserved their beers. 60 miles in a trapeze dinghy finishing into big breeze, wow.
